Analyzing the New Dust 514 Trailer

Via Destructoid.

First off, I'd like to point out that, despite what Destructoid might think, Dust 514 doesn't look "Haloriffic."

Personally, I think it looks more similar to Killzone 2 or Battlefield 2142, which is leagues better than anything defined as remotely Haloish.  The rest of my thoughts after the jump.

Dust 514 is an FPS set in the Eve Online universe.  What gamers do in Dust 514 is supposed to affect and directly relate to what gamers are doing in Eve.  The concept is amazingly interesting.

The trailer is certainly a scripted scenario, but with such little details about the game made public, it calls into question a few things.  We know Dust 514 is a multiplayer game, but could it also support cooperative play against AI opponents?

Combat also looks to be a bit more tactical than your average FPS.  It doesn't look like there will be a lot of hopping and jumping around, so Halo, Unreal Tournament, and Quake fans may find that to be a turn-off.  On the other hand, there are plenty of gamers who prefer the slower paced combat (myself included).

It looks like ground vehicles are going to be certainty.  Whether or not air support vehicles will make an apperance as player-driven is unclear.  Yes, there is a troop transport that picks up the player, but whether it is merely a device of the cutscene is unknown.  If there are flying troop transports, then players can also expect the maps to be big, probably something like Battlefield 2142 size.

And, while it would be supremely awesome to fly and control one of the motherships floating in the air, CCP has already made it clear that they act more like the cruisers from Battlefield 2142, which are destructible objectives.

Considering all the hype surrounding Dust 514, there are going to be a lot of expectations.  With any luck, CCP will deliver one of my favorite FPS games in a long while.
