Idiotic Opinions: L4D 2 Boycotters Were Whiners?
Alex Taldren |
Thursday, October 15, 2009 I'm tired of this. I've even addressed this issue once before, too.
Yes, rejoice video game journalists and fans! The boycott of Left 4 Dead 2 is over! Now you can finally get back to the way things were before the boycott... oh, wait, things never changed.
I suppose it is trendy for gamers to ridicule those who don't like something enough to organize a boycott. It makes them feel big and tough. They call them "whiners," and "complainers." Hell, maybe that's true for some of them, but that isn't the issue.
Read this nonsense from Destructoid:
I knew the boycotters would come crawling back in time for the game's release, and what do we have here? The boycotters save face by claiming that they've "accomplished everything they can," which basically means they got all the whining out of their systems and have probably been too excited by Left 4 Dead 2. It helped that Valve also flew the boycott leaders out to Seattle to have them play the game. I imagine it's hard to keep on hating after the royal treatment.
So there we go. Another victory for democracy. America is safe once more.
The boycotters don't need to "save face." They don't owe anything to the authors of Destructoid, the other fans of Left 4 Dead, Valve, me, or anyone. How incredibly elitist to assume otherwise.
Now, I was NOT a part of the official Left 4 Dead 2 boycott. However, I don't plan on buying Valve's upcoming sequel either, and it isn't because I have a boat-load of whining in my system.
America was founded on the principles of the free-market system. Companies and consumers are free to do what they want, and that includes boycotting. If consumers dislike a product, they don't buy it--that's how consumers exercise their power. The Left 4 Dead 2 boycotters are also consumers, and if they don't like the looks of Left 4 Dead 2, they can be vocal about it and choose not to buy it.
It doesn't matter whether you think their position is justified at all. You may love Left 4 Dead 2, the same way some people love Netflix and some don't. Another victory for democracy? Maybe, but America was never in danger while the boycott was in effect either.
I'm glad the boycott is over as well, but only because I won't have to read the idiotic opinions of people who are ignorant of America's free-market system and how it works.
